Join me for a hiking adventure in the Swedish highlands!

Welcome to beautiful Härjedalen and Helags Glacier

Would you like to join me in Härjedalen, where the air is pure and the water so clean you can drink it straight from the creek? Then this is your chance. Härjedalen is one of my favorite spots to hike in Sweden and for years, I’ve been dreaming of sharing this amazing place with my community. This wild and windswept corner of Sweden is home to more reindeer than people – and thanks to its remote location, few international travelers have discovered its magic. Now, I’ve put together a guided 7-day, 6-night trip that will take you from the quaint mountain village of Tännäs to the Helags Glacier, where sauna, cold plunges and local, chef-prepared food await. Are you in?

About the destination and the hike

This hiking adventure will start at our base camp, a modern cabin in the picturesque village of Tännäs. After you’ve acclimatized and experienced some local culture, we’ll set out on our hike, going hut-to-hut through the Swedish highlands. Our final destination is Helags, which at 5,892 ft (1,796 m) is Sweden’s highest peak south of the Arctic Circle and home to the country’s southernmost glacier. Named one of National Geographic’s top 10 summit hikes in the world, Helags offers dramatic mountain views, quiet trails, and a chance to experience Sweden’s unique mountain hut culture.

We’ll hike through pristine mountain landscapes shaped by the last Ice Age and generations of Sámi tradition, passing old hill farms and alpine meadows along the way. With no crowds, no noise, and no rush, there’s space here to breathe deeply, move slowly, and reconnect – with nature, and with yourself. This is an all-women’s trip for curious, adventurous souls.

About your host and guide -
Linda Åkeson McGurk

Hi, I’m Linda!

I’m a Swedish-American journalist, author and speaker who believes life is better outside. Having grown up steeped in the Nordic friluftsliv culture (open-air life), I spend most of my free time finding joy in nature – whether hiking, camping, skiing or taking a cold plunge.

A 47-year-old mother of two girls, I’ve spent the better part of the past decade advocating for outdoor play and for families to get outside and enjoy nature, rain or shine. Now that my own kids are teenagers, I’m often out on solo adventures.

I live part of the year in northern Sweden and would love to share the beauty and serenity of this place with you. You can learn more about me on my Instagram.

The itinerary

This is a 7-day, 6-night trip that starts and ends at our base camp in Tännäs. We’ll hike 6-11 miles in easy to moderate terrain through the highlands every day, however, the final hike to the peak of Helags is strenuous. If you prefer to skip the summit, there’s an option to do an Arctic fox safari instead. Since we’ll stay at local mountain huts, you only need to carry your food, sleeping bag, extra clothes and other essentials. For a detailed itinerary and list of inclusions, click here.

FAQ

How do I register for a trip?
Use the form at the end of this page to sign up for the e-mail list; I will send you a message when registration opens. Spots are allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Do I have to be an experienced hiker?
No, but you need to be able to hike 10-12 miles carrying a daypack. Most of the hiking goes through easy to moderate terrain, except for the summit hike at the Helags Glacier, which is more difficult at 6 miles and an elevation gain of approximately 2,625 ft/800 m. However, it’s not a technically advanced summit hike and no equipment is needed. The pace will be adapted according to the group’s ability.

When do I need to pay for the trip?
Once I confirm your booking, I ask for a 25% down payment to hold your spot, with the remainder due by the end of the year. The down payment is non-refundable, but the remaining 75% is refundable until 90 days prior to the trip.

How do I get to Östersund and the base camp in Tännäs?
Tännäs and the Helags Glacier lie in one of Sweden’s most remote regions, so planning your journey carefully is key. From the U.S. East Coast, flights to Östersund with Scandinavian Airlines take around 13 hours. Another option is to fly to Stockholm and continue by train with SJ – the ride to Östersund takes about 6 hours. To avoid stress and potential travel disruptions, I highly recommend arriving in Östersund a day early. From there, it’s a 2.5-hour drive to our cabin in Tännäs, and I’ll pick everyone up together in one go.

There are only four spots on this trip – will one of them be yours?
